In Support of Engaging Tenured Faculty in Hiring for Antioch College
This petition calls for Antioch College to make all decisions about faculty hiring in consultation with the tenured faculty of the college who were improperly fired by Antioch University, and with representatives of the American Association of University Professors, and to offer tenured Antioch College faculty right of first refusal for positions for which they are qualified, according to AAUP guidelines.
The faculty who taught at Antioch College in its final days carry the unbroken institutional memory of the college and the meaning of an Antioch education. They have been integral to the struggle to keep open, and to reopen, the college, and to maintain its spirit and its unique educational mission that they’ve carried out for decades. Faculty tenure was violated by Antioch University’s closure of the college, and it is the ethical and professional responsibility of any institution that claims the legacy of Antioch College to honor that tenure. The college’s tradition of shared governance, and widely accepted conventions of governance in academia, expect that faculty are central in the development of curriculum. Including them in all decisions about faculty positions and the design of the program is not only the right thing to do—it’s the best thing for the college.
As Antioch College begins the process of hiring core faculty in anticipation of admitting a new entering class of students in fall 2011, the college has a responsibility to work in collaboration with the tenured faculty who were improperly fired by Antioch University, and with the American Association of University Professors, to first identify those positions in the reopened college for which tenured college faculty are qualified, and offer qualified faculty right of first refusal for those positions. The faculty and AAUP staff should work with the college administration to determine what jobs to post and who among the faculty are eligible for those positions. This is in keeping with the accepted academic practice of “emergency” or “opportunity” hires, used by institutions when an immediate need and unique qualifications are deemed more imperative than a long, costly national search: in this case, the unparalleled experience of teaching at Antioch College. [http://facultyjustice.org] National searches for faculty positions are not legally required.
It is rightly the college’s faculty, and not exclusively a board, administration, and consultants, that should design the college’s curriculum, including which positions are created and who is hired to fill those positions. As the American Association of University Professors stated in its 2009 report on the closing of Antioch College:
“The committee is concerned about the role that the Antioch faculty members who were released when operations were suspended will play in the development of the academic program at a reopened Antioch College and in teaching there when operations resume. The investigating committee trusts that the Antioch College Continuation Corporation will appreciate the fundamental importance of the tenure system and will offer reinstatement to those whose appointments terminated with the closing, restoring their tenure rights. Moreover, the committee trusts that the corporation will approve a system of shared governance when the college reopens, ensuring primary faculty responsibility for academic matters as called for in the Statement on Government of Colleges and Universities.” [http://tiny.cc/aaup]
As the alumni resolved at their 2008 reunion: “The Antioch College Alumni are committed to the uninterrupted continuation of Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio as a residential institution of higher education with a tenured faculty.” [http://bit.ly/cT6O4q] The only way to do this now is to honor the tenure that has been awarded to faculty of the college.
For these reasons, we call on Antioch College to suspend all faculty job searches until it agrees to follow AAUP guidelines. We stand in full support of the 14 tenured Antioch College faculty and their request that representatives of their group, the Ad Hoc Tenured Faculty Committee, the AAUP, and Antioch College develop an action plan for implementing these guidelines.

Abandoning the faculty who guided the Antioch spirit, who carried the school through its closure and kept it alive in non-stop mode is not only unethical, but a betrayal of Antioch's long-lived commitment to honor service and intellectual rigor. How can Antioch be reanimated without some of the people who helped maintain its spirit? On more practical terms, how can you possibly hire new faculty without any core faculty? Bring back the people who have been holding up Main Building with their bare hands.

Antioch College will not be truly saved until the people who were wrongfully cut loose in the 2008 closing receive justice; not until the living educational community (the Antioch "DNA" which was so vaunted in 2007-2008) returns to the heart of the institution presently calling itself Antioch College. Simply put, without faculty reinstatement, Antioch College has not been saved and may never be.

Antioch is an idea, a method of education geared, according to A. Morgan, to educate the "original thinker"—so that its graduates would be levers “to move the world.” This was a hard fought battle that was not, according to Morgan, achieved during his long presidential tenure. “Our trouble at Antioch,” wrote Morgan toward the end of his presidency, “is that in recruiting our faculty we must draw from the general reservoir of college and university teachers, and the old tradition is brought to Antioch. It requires tremendous effort to create new habits of thinking and acting, such as is demanded by the Antioch program.” Those “new habits of thinking and acting” that have been the genius of Antioch over the past seventy years have been passed down through its faculty. At this moment of renaissance it must be the genius of Antioch that is given life, and that can only happen if its former tenured faculty is engaged.

Without the tenured faculty who were in place when the college was closed, any claim that a reopened Antioch College represents a continuation of the historic Antioch College would be without merit or substance. How the faculty are treated affects how alumni from the 1980s-2000s engage with the college. Alumni have strong personal relationships with members of the faculty. If the college shuts out the faculty, alumni will continue their relationship with the faculty--and not the college. Is the college willing to dismiss (at least) three decades of engaged and committed alumni along with the faculty? You might miss us.

It is imperative for the success of the college to call on tenured faculty, who dedicated their lives to education of Antioch's students. Without them we will lose out on 150+ years of the development of the schools fundamental education ideologies, values, and sense of campus community. Antioch has always embraced the new, but we are in a critical moment of development that requires input from those who remember the past, who can make this transition a seamless continuum.

I believe it was extremely unethical of the university to fire faculty that have been promised a certain postision, that would employ them, and create their livelyhood. This was was stolen from the faculty who have been fired, without any consideration. A question that I ask myself is how can people act in ways that intentionally hurt other people and their communities?
In making this decision the University did not consult any of the community memebers that encompassed Antioch College and therefore was not acting from a place that served the interests of this community. The University was and is acting from a place of meeting its self interests. If the University would even try to attempt to open their minds to what the needs of the actual community was maybe this wouldn't have had to happen.
I hope that the Faculty that helped create and cocreat the unique culture that was Antioch College will be rehired inorder to help rejuvinate the Antioch College culture that was and that I experienced while attending there. It was a unique sort of culture, and one that is lacking signifigantly in this society.

I have lived in Yellow Springs only four years but took two fine poetry courses at Antioch before its close and have done what I could to support its renewal including taking courses offered by Non-Stop Antioch, I particularly admire Jill Becker whose skill, spirit and remarkable creativity would surely be a boon in any role she might take up for the new Antioch College. Please do not undervalue the importance of institutional memory as a support in avoiding former mistakes as well as in helping to carry on important traditions such as participatory government and a work component.

My education at Antioch College was amazing even in light of the closing. This would not have been so if the faculty had not been so determined and passionate about me and my development as a life time learner. Some faculty left in my final year, and I of course don't hold it against them, however those that stayed, that fought and persevered against the odds deserve their jobs back. They are the real foundation of Antioch's spirit and history. To not celebrate them and the victories they have had is counter to Antioch's legacy.

I support the faculty of the former Antioch College. I believe it is essential for the success of the reopened college that professors with deep ties in the community and experience with the unchanging essentials of an Antioch education be first to be considered for tenured positions at the college. I do not think, however, this is a matter of tenure rights as those obligations lie with Antioch University who violated the spirit and the letter of AAUP policy and faculty handbook that served as the contract between the University and its faculty at the time the college was closed.

I went to Hampshire College myself, so I know how precious these kinds of alternative institutions are, and how fragile; in times of stress, they are often the hardest hit. Antioch deserves to be what it has been, and tenured faculty deserve to serve in the ways in which they were promised when hired. Please look into your hearts and do the right thing here. There are valuable resources, irreplaceable even, among the tenured faculty who are still willing to serve and have the right to do so under common academic practice.

Antioch's tenured faculty are some of the best, brightest, most creative and passionate professors I have ever met, and I have dealt with many. Antioch was very lucky to have these folks in the first place; what was done to them is an outrage and a tragedy. The idea of not giving them their positions back and of doing a job search while they have been tirelessly fighting for several years now on behalf of the College they have devoted their lives to is an outrage of profound proportions. We fought to keep Antioch alive and get back its honor; the only just course of action is to reinstate ALL of our dedicated tenured faculty immediately into whatever position most closely fits their expertise if their original position has been eliminated, or their original position if it has been retained. This is the only honorable, honest course of action in this case, and it needs to happen asap.

The continuation of this proud institution without its faculty and in defiance of faculty governance is a Pyrrhic victory. It may make money, but it won't educate.

The right and just action in this case does not require a legal team or even a committee meeting; it is prima facie. Tenure is tenure. It does not end with a layoff or a change in management. Hire back the tenured faculty. Antioch has the opportunity to be a bulwark of social justice, so why choose to be a pariah of higher education instead? If they choose the latter, then professional academic organizations and honor societies should boycott Antioch in perpetuity.

The AAUP stands for academic integrity and the interests of faculty everywhere. Their advice to us in rehiring Antioch tenured faculty is sound - Following it helps establish the good name of the new College, in the absence at present of accreditation. Following the AAUP advice will assure the continuity between the old and the new for Alumni, applicants, and long-time supporters of the college.

Rich and I witnessed the Troubles that began with non-Antiochians usurping control and led to the closing and near death of the College. A resurrected Antioch College needs the memory and advice of the tenured faculty who were fired. That is not only fair, it is true to Antiochian values.

The Faculty of Antioch College who found themselves unemployed June 2008 had consistently given above and beyond what their job descriptions encompassed out of a firm belief in the ideals of Antioch. Over the years they taught without pay when the college was bankrupt in the 70's and forgave portions of their salaries in order to retain staff positions. You just don't hear about a group of professionals committed like this to an institution and what it stands for. To treat them like second class citizens is appalling for all they have done to provide us with the world class education we received at Antioch College. If tenure had not existed then, many of those dedicated professors may have been forced out when they voiced opinions contrary to what various administrations or board of trustees agendas were. To employ a faculty without tenure is to employee a faculty constantly weighing their voice against the status quo of the current administration and board for fear of finding themselves unemployed. This does not sound like the Antioch College I know and love.

Hiring some or all of these tenured Antioch College faculty is critical to incorporating the community spirit and culture of Antioch into the reborn Antioch College
Edna Small, Ph.D.

It is disheartening to see this being treated by the currentnt administration as a legal issue, rather than a moral one. In addition to our institutional responsibilities to the tenured faculty, there are clear guidelines in the academic community that bear on the issue.
We welcomed the support of the AAUP in our efforts to regain our independence. Let's follow their guidance to function within the best standards available.
Melvin L. Kohn
I am the widower of an Antioch alumna; a friend of several other Antioch alumni, and an admirer and active supporter of an independent Antioch college. I am also a tenured professor of sociology at the Johns Hopkins University and a member of the AAUP.
The Board may have no legal responsibility to the tenured faculty who were fired by the University when it (temporarily) closed the College, but the Board certainly has a moral responsibility to the College's tenured faculty. Moreover, as a matter of good governance in the Antioch tradition, the Board should avail the College of the services of the experienced faculty in developing curriculum and re-establishing the College's distinctive values and educational philosophy.
